A mostly pleasant 51 mile ride today. We left Carbondale at 6:30am hoping to beat some severe thunder storms in the forecast. We made it to camp in chester, illinois by noon completely dry. We’re outdoors but under cover so bring on the rain. We rode several miles along the Mississippi river sometimes riding on the top of a levee right next to the water. The bike felt like brand new after all the work that was done on it in Carbondale. The shifting was jumpy and chain stretched so after work everything is working well. The last 10 miles broke the reverie of the day. We hit a busy road with guess what….. more coal trucks. I hope the below picture gives you a perspective on how huge these trucks are. We made it safely and early so it’s like a half layover day. Stay tuned. We cross the Mississippi first thing tomorrow morning.

  1. Looking at a map of the U.S. it's very impressive to see how far you have already traveled since May 17...
Glad that you and the bike are feeling better...
In the early blogs you were concerned about a 60 mile segment, now you are having a "...pleasant 51 mile ride"...
Have decided not to have eggs benedict until your return (a small tribute)...
Just thinking that this is probably the longest you have ever gone without a bogey...

  2. dear joe, virginia was one thing. But Kentucky! -I keep scanning the expanse of wilderness, shaking my head in bewilderment, and suddenly your in the midsection of the country. It sounds as though a more comfortable rhythm has developed, minus the nagging equipment failures. Your compatibility with the ride each day is very reassuring and the layovers seem like a critical refreshment. Keep West young man! love, david and ann

  3. No Olive Oil in sight? Yankees beat Mets 9-8. Sounds like you are in good shape and everything is going well. We enjoy seeing the pictures, and hear about your great accomodations. ERS
